João Costa, 26. Artist and Designer. Born in Petrópolis, Brazil.

Currently living and working in Cambridge, MA.

João Costa focuses his work on the research of autonomous systems and sentient networks. He pursues the investigation of rhizomes and the embodiment of different behaviors into mechanisms and environments, with possible applications being fabrication tools and installations with enhanced functionality, mirroring specific routines found in nature.


He works as a Research Assistant on the Mediated Matter group at MIT Media Lab. Holding an M.P.S. degree from ITP at the New York University, and a B.A. in Graphic Design and Visual Communication from PUC in Rio de Janeiro, Costa is currently an M.S. candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His work has been featured in various design and art publications, such as The Creators Project, Arduino and Creative Applications.
